I was visiting family in northern Victoria, Australia, just before Christmas. I’ve long admired this majestic gum tree across from their place. I’d toyed with the idea of painting it for ages, but I couldn’t quite get it right.
At dusk it was finally cool enough to venture outside. I went for a lazy after-dinner walk down the dirt road past this paddock. A distant bushfire had turned the sky hazy and the colours vivid. The contrast of gold against the blue shadows was stunning. I climbed into the long grass to get a shot of this view. I knew I was finally going to paint it.
I wanted this painting to capture the golden light of an Aussie summer and how the heat dials up the colours.

I was walking along the lakefront in Queenstown on an icy autumn afternoon, when I spotted this scene. I instantly saw a painting in the contrast between the rigid structure of the wharf and the natural movement in the water and mountains.
The “floating bar” sign felt oddly amusing to include in a serious oil painting, and the lone figure gazing out to the mountains was intriguing. I wanted this painting to capture the cold light of the day, but also feel inviting, like you’d fancy joining him up there for a pint.

I always loved this corner of Pimlico, where the Plane trees from Eccleston Square cast vibrant blue shadows over the terrace houses. I was initially drawn to this scene because of those shadows, but when I looked closer, it was the moments of red and orange throughout, and how they cut through the cold blue light, that really made it special.
I wanted this painting to give that feeling of a brisk walk on a cold but sunny autumn day. The grand buildings dwarf the couple as they dash across the street, caught in a rare sliver of sunlight.

I was strolling around a vineyard just outside Lobethal when I came across the light cascading through a cluster of pine trees on its edge.
I was intrigued by the pattern created by the repeating vertical and diagonal shapes. But really, this piece is all about that low light casting bold blue shadows at the end of a hot summer's day. I can almost smell those pine trees.

The lively, beautiful parks are one of my favourite things about living in London. When the sun finally comes out, everyone pours into them to sunbake, socialise and celebrate. There’s a kind of collective relief in the air. As the shadows lengthen, the crowds slowly pack up, leaving stray deckchairs and a few stragglers scattered across the lawn.
I wanted this painting to capture that warm evening glow and the lingering happiness at the end of a summer picnic. It’s all about that feeling of worshipping the sun in London when it finally comes out.

The Eyre Peninsula in South Australia has such a wild, isolated beauty. I was staying on a farm right at its tip, where it felt like we were the only people in the world. I went for a walk to look for emus at dusk as the moon was rising. The way the final rays of sun made the distant paddocks golden orange was so striking under the grey-blue sky. The sliver of The Bight that I could see in the distance glowed a surreal blue. I knew I wanted to capture this moment in paint.
This painting was a challenge in subtlety. There are no cast shadows, no super dark darks or bright highlights. It’s all about quiet stillness created through careful variation in colour temperature and compressed values.

When I was in Queenstown last year, I was fascinated by the sunset over the Remarkables. For a few minutes, a band of vivid peach light stretched across the mountains. Meanwhile the shadows turned an almost unnatural cobalt blue and the town below seemed to melt into the trees.

On an evening walk this summer I crossed over Lambeth Bridge. It was one of those long summer days where the lights come on well before the sun fully sets. Gazing over the river to Westminster, the combination of blue-greens and oranges struck me as really beautiful. And the structure of horizontal and vertical lines immediately stood out to me as a scene to paint.
I wanted this painting to feel intriguing, as your eye is drawn up across the staircase, the river and the pontoon to Big Ben.

This painting began on the castle walls in Koroni, when a pine tree caught the light off the water and made me pause. The view felt strikingly unusual as I was looking straight into the tree while also looking down to the rocks and out to the Mediterranean sea, with the horizon mostly hidden behind branches.
I wanted the painting to feel like summer on the Med. Bright, vivid, the way a holiday day feels when the air is warm and the light bounces off everything.

While exploring Rhodes last year, I stumbled across this perfect scene. I was in a hurry, so couldn’t linger, but that bright yellow seared itself in my mind. I’m so happy to finally paint it.
The striking colours are what drew me to paint this scene, with the saturated blue and yellow contrasting with the muted greens and oranges in the shadows.
I wanted this painting to feel like summer. Imagine driving that scooter through these colourful stoney streets under a hot blue sky. Perfect.

Those clouds! I jumped up onto the Thames wall to make sure I got the best view of them looming over the park and river, blocking out all the sun. Walking along the edge of Battersea Park, with Albert Bridge getting even more beautiful as you approach, is always spectacular. I love how different it is every time, but always magical.
This painting is all about that strange light effect, just before the sun bursts back on the scene and London becomes bright and summery again.

I arrived at the Alhambra as soon as it opened, and the day was already warming quickly. While wandering the gardens, I found a spot where the trees perfectly framed the towers and the view of Granada below. The colours were so beautiful I knew straight away I wanted to paint it.
I wanted to capture that fleeting moment of crisp greens and blues in the morning light, just before Granada starts to bake under the July sun.

My painting is of the harsh sunlight and untidy bush near Corowa, NSW, where Tom Roberts painted Shearing the Rams. I visited in January as a kind of artist pilgrimage. The original shearing shed burned down long ago, but a replica now stands nearby. This stretch of bush is rich in the history of Australian painting, and visiting it inspired me to paint this piece.
In my painting, two figures walk towards the shed. They are intentionally ambiguous, standing in for the settlers, artists, and others who have moved through this bush before me.
I wanted this painting to feel intriguing, and almost mysterious as you come up with your own story where the two figures are going and why. I wanted to capture the intense heat of the day, the crisp crackling grasses underfoot and the dry summer wind in the trees.

Dusk over Lake Wakatipu in Queenstown, New Zealand.
I spent a wonderful week in Queenstown in April for my brother’s wedding. Other than indulging in many celebratory drinks, I spent the week admiring the breathtaking scenery. I was especially captivated by the way the sun lit up the mountains just before it dipped below the horizon.
In this painting I wanted to emphasise the finality of that glimpse of warmth, and how freezing it was in the shadows. And, I wanted my painting to make you feel how really, really cold it was, and how much you long for that warmth to return.

Golden summer sunset in the Adelaide Hills wine country.
It was the red barn that first caught my eye and compelled me to paint this scene. But, what made it really special (other than being night two of my honeymoon!) was that low, hot, golden light filtering across the fields and vines.
I wanted my painting to feel warm and inviting, like you’re having a glass of something wonderful on the veranda while watching the colours change on the hills. I also wanted the red barn to act as a beacon for your attention, pulling your eye into the distance.

Karst mountains near Ninh Binh, Vietnam, under an eerie pollution-tinged sunset.
I spent 6 weeks in Vietnam this year and the dramatic karst mountain landscape and rice paddies were breathtaking.
I encountered this mesmerising scene with the eerie orange pollution-tinged sunset while cycling out to dinner as the fireflies were emerging around me. It felt beautiful but strangely unsettling. But, the distant man in blue was reassuringly leading the way.
I wanted to exaggerate this unsettling glow in my painting, losing the edge of the mountain into the sky and capturing the reflection on the water, path and glowing off the man’s hat so you can really feel that eerie, hazy effect.
