I painted this piece of Ipanema Beach in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, based on preparatory studies I'd done en plein air on the beach in the early morning.
For this painting I wanted to experiment with the impressionists' technique of broken colour. I layered cool and warm colours of the same value to create the vibrant, shimmering morning light.
