I got up at 5am for this painting, walking along the Thames at dawn looking for the right composition. I had a clear idea to capture the sun rising over the river, and I was lucky London’s fickle weather complied.
For me, this painting is all about colour and light and celebrating the city at its summery best. This view felt unmistakably London, with Albert Bridge, Battersea Park, and the Power Station all in one scene.
The vertical slash of light is the star of the show, and I love how the yellows, blues and purples interact so beautifully. I enjoyed exaggerating the effect of the bridge disappearing into the silhouette and I’d love to bring that into more of my future paintings too.

Is it a bit odd to have a favourite red phone box in London? Well... I do! This one down by the Thames in Pimlico, framed so beautifully by the trees and Battersea Power Station in the background, always makes me smile.
I've been meaning to paint it for a while now, and in fact this painting is based on a photo I took one winter many years ago. I knew I wanted to paint it, but didn't have the skills yet to execute it. So it stayed in my arsenal until now, and I'm so happy I was patient.

On an evening walk this summer I crossed over Lambeth Bridge. It was one of those long summer days where the lights come on well before the sun fully sets. Gazing over the river to Westminster, the combination of blue-greens and oranges struck me as really beautiful. And the structure of horizontal and vertical lines immediately stood out to me as a scene to paint.
I wanted this painting to feel intriguing, as your eye is drawn up across the staircase, the river and the pontoon to Big Ben.

This painting began on the castle walls in Koroni, when a pine tree caught the light off the water and made me pause. The view felt strikingly unusual as I was looking straight into the tree while also looking down to the rocks and out to the Mediterranean sea, with the horizon mostly hidden behind branches.
I wanted the painting to feel like summer on the Med. Bright, vivid, the way a holiday day feels when the air is warm and the light bounces off everything.

While exploring Rhodes last year, I stumbled across this perfect scene. I was in a hurry, so couldn’t linger, but that bright yellow seared itself in my mind. I’m so happy to finally paint it.
The striking colours are what drew me to paint this scene, with the saturated blue and yellow contrasting with the muted greens and oranges in the shadows.
I wanted this painting to feel like summer. Imagine driving that scooter through these colourful stoney streets under a hot blue sky. Perfect.

For seven years, I lived on the street behind those phone boxes in beautiful Pimlico. In winter the sun is so low that it funnels straight down some of the streets, lighting the white terrace houses in oranges and yellows along its way. On the corner of Belgrave Road, at the right time of day, it also makes the red phone boxes glow.
This painting is all about capturing that light effect. But the colours also drew me to paint this scene, with the rich purple road, bright red phone boxes and cold yellow light.

On an evening walk along the harbour in Vathy, Greece, I encountered this idyllic scene. It was early autumn and the sun was just about to disappear behind the mountains, giving the air a golden glow. The taverna was just setting up for dinner, the fishing boats were anchored for the night and a mother and son were playing by the water’s edge.
I wanted this painting to feel soft, serene and intimate. It’s all about that beautiful light.

Those clouds! I jumped up onto the Thames wall to make sure I got the best view of them looming over the park and river, blocking out all the sun. Walking along the edge of Battersea Park, with Albert Bridge getting even more beautiful as you approach, is always spectacular. I love how different it is every time, but always magical.
This painting is all about that strange light effect, just before the sun bursts back on the scene and London becomes bright and summery again.

I arrived at the Alhambra as soon as it opened, and the day was already warming quickly. While wandering the gardens, I found a spot where the trees perfectly framed the towers and the view of Granada below. The colours were so beautiful I knew straight away I wanted to paint it.
I wanted to capture that fleeting moment of crisp greens and blues in the morning light, just before Granada starts to bake under the July sun.
